5 Must See Locations in Washington, D.C.

Going to Washington D.C.? In my previous post, I shared how to see a lot of the iconic parts of D.C. in just one day. But, what about if you are exploring for more than one day? Here are just a few more things I think are worth checking out! Some you’ve probably heard of, but some that are likely new to you. The itinerary for your trip to D.C. will be growing.

Newseum

The Newseum is by far one of the coolest museums that I have ever been to. Dive into the world of journalism from around the world through a wide variety of topics. Learn about the role that journalism took in the relaying of information through the Berlin Wall. Or look at a more light-hearted exhibit about the First Dogs and other pets of the Presidents. Find out what exhibits are currently on display here, but whatever exhibits are it is sure to be a great visit.

U.S. Capitol Building

One activity that I think makes a great stop in D.C. is the U.S. Capitol. Take a FREE tour of the Capitol and learn more than you thought you there was to learn about. The tours are staff-led and well worth your time. It is literally so hard to put into words how amazing this tour is, so you’ll just have to see it yourself.

National Gallery of Art

As an art museum fanatic, it is always the first place I put on my radar when I travel. When I first visited the National Gallery of Art I had just finished taking AP Art History, so I was thrilled to see some of the real-life pieces that I had studied. Even if you haven’t studied art before I still highly recommend the National Gallery as a spot to visit. You will be able to see some of America’s most brilliant artists and artworks. Who knows? You may discover a newfound love for art.

Mt. Vernon

Mount Vernon near Washington, D.C.

Okay, so you got me. So Mt. Vernon isn’t technically in D.C., but it is pretty dang close and is worth the short 30-minute drive into Virginia. Spend time exploring the land owned by the first President of the United States. Take a look inside Washington’s home, learn about the trades, enjoy the beautiful gardens, and visit George and Martha’s tomb. For just a few dollars more you can add a tour that provides a unique addition to your day. Learn about the filming of National Treasure 2, find out about the real history of Mt. Vernon, or take a boat tour on the Potomac River. For more information about Mt. Vernon click here. Mt. Vernon has so much to do that you will want to take the whole day to visit!

Iwo Jima Memorial

The Iwo Jima Memorial is one of my favorite memorials in Washington, D.C. Inspired by the 1945 photograph, the memorial depicts six Marines raising the United States flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima. This memorial is entirely awe-inducing. For a really beautiful view of the memorial, I suggest visiting at dusk as an amazing silhouette is created.

Well, there you have it, my suggestions for some must-sees in D.C. Did I miss anything? Let me know in the comments below.
